Two Things Challenge - Free / Range

Thought I'd have a go at the Two Things Challenge this week. At the moment there is an advert on TV here for Anchor Butter with the strap line 'the free range butter company.' Surely all butter is free range as the milk used comes from cows that graze on pasture, otherwise there would be no milk and therefore no butter! Anyway...here are some free range sheep, grazing on top of Leckhampton Hill. Do you count sheep to get to sleep?

If you want to join in with Two Things, or to see how others have interpreted this weeks challenge, head over to the Two Things Challenge blog.

Lovely pastoral photo. Why do those sheep have colorful spots on their backs? I'm curious.

Not all milk is free range, in Europe for instance cattle are kept indoors all winter and spring and only let out to pasture after the hay is brought in. In warmer countries with large farms lie Australia, dairy cattle are pasture fed.

Baaa!

Arija is right about not all milk, meat, eggs, etc being free range. The conditions in which food animals are kept can be downright cruel. Unfortunately, especially for meat animals, it usually makes for flesh that's much more tender because the animals aren't allowed to move much — less muscle :(

Letting animals move about freely like this is much, much better.

That's aside from providing you with wonderful photo opportunities!

Great photo for this weeks 2 thing challenge. I too was wondering about the colors on the sheep's back....markings so that everyone knows whose sheep they are?

I'm not even going to get into the free range thingy and the true meaning....I've read too much about the truth of of it all and have become a vegetarian ( well, almost ) I don't eat red meat anymore.

Lack of food doesn't seem to the problem here! :-) Lovely picture.

Ha! :) I was hoping to find a scene like this, but was unable. Glad you found it for us.

Have you been on the No 3 bus to Douglas? I jest this is the kind of scene I have passed ever day for 14 days. Rolling fields, sheep and lambs. Lovely spring image. Insomniac that I am would die of boredom counting sheep.
