Our saying of "bless you" when someone sneezes originated in the medieval belief that one's soul left for a moment when one sneezed - so they wanted to send you off with a blessing should the soul decide not to re-inhabit the body it had just left!
In a different context is this line from T.S. Eliot's "La Figlia Che Piange", as the soul leaves the body torn and bruised/as the mind deserts the body it has used..."
Wonderful series. The drawing in the top photo is my favorite, too.
