"Why the Penfold?" I here you ask. This hexagonal designed letter box is called a Penfold and is one of eight in Cheltenham. Apparently Cheltenham has the highest number of Victorian post boxes in the country - eight of these ones and six round ones, all with the VR insignia (Victoria Regina.) In the UK letter boxes are inscribed this way in relation to the reigning monarch at the time of installation (most now have ER on them.) This letter box on Lansdown Road used to have the finial on the top missing but it has been replaced with a replica one, tomorrows post box is the original version (yes, the start of a mini-series!)

Does Dangermouse live in there? I feel a post box challenge coming up. Fancy shooting 100 of these curios?
Fascinating
In reply to Babs - I know someone who has been photographing all the ones in Bournemouth - about 300 of them!
I love your title! This is a lovely old postbox, I don't think I've seen anything like that here.
They sure made them look nice back in the day.
Nice looking post boxes, quite classy.
Much more ornate than the boring ones we have here! I love how the red pops out between the trees.
Did Vicki write a lot of letters? Must have. If she was around now she would probably twitter.
Maybe I ask what does ER stands for? I see them in postboxes in the UK the last time I was there.
Classy classics & really fascinating history. Hee-hee - it really does look like it's peeking through.
Any history on the use of red color?
I feel like stopping and chatting with this last Penfold. Friendly but shy little thing!
