Theme Day - Sister Cities

Where Cheltenham is concerned it is Twin Towns. My post is a bit of a cheat but I thought it was a good chance to show this recently unveiled signpost. It stands in Imperial Gardens and shows all of the towns that Cheltenham UK is twinned with.

Cheltenham was one of the first towns to forge formal links to others in the 1950's. The town was awarded a European Flag of Honour in 1988 to rewarded its achievements in promoting international friendship. The idea of twinning is to promote friendship and understanding of cultural, recreational, educational and commercial activities between twinned towns. Cheltenham is twinned with the following towns around the world - Annecy (France), Cheltenham (USA), Gottingen (Germany), Sochi (Russia), Weihai (China) and has friendship links with Kisumu (Kenya) and Stampersgat (Holland).

There are over 140 other CDPB's taking part in this Theme Day, and I'm sure the rest haven't cheated like me. To see Sister Cities all over the world click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

Make sure you come back tomorrow for an all new looking Cheltenham Daily Photo!

Between you and Hyde dp you have explaining what twinning towns and cities means to the UK. Those signs really but it in perspective the physical distance between us as opposed to the virtual world. Nicely put together, excellent info for the the outsider looking in today.

Cheating? What cheating? I've slacked off and let someone do the work of finding a photo for me! I think it is lovely that you have such a post showing off all your twins!

No cheating at all - that signposts reminds me of our "crown pole" which only shows the direction to the other towns in Tameside.

I wish Willits had such a pole. You came up with a perfectly charming answer to the twin/sister city challenge.

Not cheating at all, just a creative interpretation of the theme! What a great idea!

Did you know one of your twin towns, Sochi, is the home of the winter Olympics in 2014? An ideal excuse for a photograhy trip I reckon - though you should probably start saving up now!

It this is cheating, then at least it's very creative. And educational. You have seven — I couldn't even find out if Quezon City has a sister city!

Ooh, you got yourself a redesign? Cool! I'll be back tomorrow to check it out!

Great post. Proving what I could only find through google.

We all agree there was no cheating on your part. A sensible and quite appropriate solution encompassing all twins. Interesting to learn Cheltenham was an early innovator of the Twin / Sister city idea.

Ah, there are so many cities in the USA that borrowed names from Great Britain, Birmingham, Ala., for one!

Marley, Oooo, it sounds like you've been playing with your template. I'll look forward to seeing your "new look."

Seeing the Cheltenham, USA sign makes me wonder if the US folks named their town for a home they left in Cheltenham, UK? BTW, in the States, we note what state cities are in. Do you know which state in the USA we might find the twin Cheltenham?
