I Just Called To Say...

On my trip along the Lower High Street (sorry, High Street West End!) I discovered this little gem of a shop selling nothing but telephones. None of these modern digital phones though, it was filled with phones from the past. Retro phones from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Phones that look like Mickey Mouse and Kermit The Frog. Phones that belonged in country houses during the 1920's. Name a style and it was there! But, in true Marley style, I wasn't brave enough to ask the owner if I could take some photos. Pathetic, I know. So the shop sign will have to do. I can't quite believe the claim on the sign 'As used by Royalty and the Gentry'. I can't really imagine The Queen popping down Cheltenham's Lower High Street to buy an R2-D2 phone!

Yesterday I was given an award by D.C Confidential, which I am very grateful for. I'm going to use the weekend to ponder who to pass it on to. I'll post the winners on Monday.

It is amazing how much nerve it takes to ask to take a photo doesn't it? I don't ask either and feel uncomfortable in some instances even snapping shots! but I like this one!

Thank you, Marley, for all your visits and comments. I hope to feel better soon and get back to normal.

The shop sign must do the job as the business is still in business. Maybe the royal thing is for tourists. It might be the most photographed sign in your neighborhood.

I just gave up my home phone line recently because nobody ever calls me on it except my parents. Everyone else calls me on my cell (mobile) phone.

So I decided to get a spiffy new cell phone with everything on it and cancel the home line.

"As used by royalty and the gentry" I think refers to the phone on the sign, not an R2-D2 phone. ;D But I have a friend who'd love that R2-D2 one!

I think I would've loved that shop! I like old, quirky everyday things. Some things on my list to eventually buy: telephone, typewriting, Singer sewing machine. ;)

Oops, make that "typewriter." ;)

hilda I always mistype em as tripewriters - not so easy to go back and correct

anyhow I saw the thumbnail on the portal first and thought it was a pub sign (maybe offering Theakston's) but as a shop sign it is much more interesting - maybe for me more interesting than a photo of the shop might have been.

I guess old telephones have become "conversation pieces!"

What a cute shop!

You certainly find any similar shop over here where phone shops are only selling Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung etc..

That is a TOTALLY cool sign! I love the "As used by Royalty and Gentry" part. Bespeaks a bygone era. My sister has an old, 1930s era telephone in her house. When I'm at her house and it rings, I answer it (with her permission, of course) and say, "Janeen and Phillip's really cool phone."

If I ever make it to Cheltenham, this shop is on my list of "to see."
