Chetenham College

This is the view from the balconies in yesterdays post. It is the world famous Cheltenham Boys College. Well, it allows girls now but locally it is known as the Boys College. The college dates from 1841 and has been on this site, in these Gothic Revival buildings since 1843. It was opened as Cheltenham Proprietary College and was founded to educate the sons of gentlemen. The college took in day and boarding students, and still does, with many surrounding streets having halls of residence. The college was originally split into Classical and Military schools but this ended in the middle of the last century. The college is one of several independent fee paying schools in Cheltenham, educating students between 13 and 18 years old. The college grounds are very large with many buildings and the huge chapel (on the left of the photo) was built in 1893-96 for the college's 50th Jubilee celebrations! The college also hosts the Cheltenham Cricket Festival, which started yesterday, and has been held there since 1872.

So, what do you think about the modern Century Court (see yesterdays post) being built opposite the classic Cheltenham College? Now you can see what all the fuss was about at the time!

that does seem like such a nice old 'stately' structure to be right next to a modern building... i still like yesterday's building though, and think it has its own right to be there =)

It is a neat place with lots of history. I would think some of the boys who went there would put up a bigger fuss about the modern Century Court than anybody else.

The photography is very nice.

It's a lovely campus. Quite Oxfordian, those spires, am I right?

What a lovely campus. Those are lucky students indeed! Now that I see the contrast with the older buildings, I can understand what all the fuss is about that you mentioned yesterday. I still like the modern building though. That would fit in well here in New York!

I don't have much to say about this but I do admire those impeccable lawns. So tempting for a little pétanque... then run fast, to avoid detention!

Who gets to park their car right there?

Give me this image any day over yesterdays. Not the phot, just the yucky modern building. I know I'm stuck in my ways when it comes to architecture.

Well, Marley, the century court has the better view out their windows for sure. Thanks to you, I didn't have to pay a half million pounds to have the same view! Great shot.

I read joke in the Reader's Digest once... A young man in a car, while parked, in the village of Cheltenham, threw a chocolate wrapping outside. An old lady passing by picked it up and threw it back in his car. The young man said, "Oh, I don't need it." The old lady said, "Neither does Cheltenham" Ha! Ha!

I'm glad I'm getting to see Cheltenham through your eyes.
