Grow Your Own

That's the buzz phrase at the moment, what with the rising food prices. This is Cheltenham Borough Councils attempt to encourage people to grow veggies at home, showing that you don't need much space. Normally the beds and borders of Cheltenham's parks and gardens are filled with summer flowers but this one, in Sandford Park, stands out from the crowd. It has (starting at the front) parsley, chives, beetroot, bronze fennel and sweet corn growing in it. The bed is edged with purple violas and yellow calendula for some colour, and the green feathery leafed plant on each end is dill. I think this new planting scheme is a great idea, I just hope the produce is harvested and used. It just goes to show what can be done to help save some money.

So, do you grow your own food?

We do have a garden in the summer....tomatoes, green lettuce, peppers and the ever prolific zucchini!!!!! I love the ingenuity of your town!

The question is, who benefits from this show garden? Poor and homeless, town council members? Who takes care of the garden?

Yes, we're growing beets, lettuce, tomatoes and beans along with a few herbs this summer.

The veges and flowers look lovely :)Kudos to the good gardener.

On my balcony, a little chili plant is one proud resident among other potted plants

No garden here this year, but I grew up in a family where we gardened. Corn, peas, beans, potatoes, carrots, radishes, chard, and tomatoes. Nothing quite as good as food fresh from the field.

oooh, I LOVE this!!! A vegetable or a herb garden can be such a beautiful thing. It can be pretty, it does not need to be rows of carrots. The problem is when it is too pretty, if you eat something, you mess up the entire composition.

It also reminds me of something I've read recently. Can't remember where though. I think it might be in the UK. It was about a spontaneous movement of activists that would only operate at night in the city. They would set their heart on piece of grass and overnight transform it into an English Border with flowers, bushes, etc. Gotta love that kind of action!
