Go West

I've mentioned before about how Cheltenham's Lower High Street has been rebranded High Street West End, and here is the proof. This 'modern' sign can be found on the High Street at the point where it starts to become less attractive. That end of our town has somewhat of a reputation for being a bit dodgy, with independent shops, poor housing, and unemployment. The real problem is the Council. If they put as much money into this part of Cheltenham as they do with the more upmarket areas there wouldn't be such a perceived problem. The lower High Street isn't really that bad, although poverty in that part of town is very real. It will take more than a few signs to bring about meaningful improvement.

sounds a bit like the tale of the west end of nearby Ashton - area of small but independant shops - a bit run down but lots of charachter - traffic management that meant access between it and centre of town was difficult so less trade so area gets neglected and then that used as an excuse to knock it all down and then, what do you know, yuppie apartments and offices spring up.

It is an attractive sign and I like the modern looking "W" logo. Hopefully more improvements in that area of town will follow. (I also hope your heat breaks soon! We've had a bit of relief from the heat lately.)

Cool picture!

I've fallen behind in my comments over here, but wanted to say, you've had some fabulous photos the last few days! I especially enjoyed the bit about lawn bowling. Very informative!

There is certainly nothing dodgy about the sign. Perhaps the area will be inspired to grow up to it. :)

That's a really unique sign.

What an interesting sign. It could be all sorts of things. I'll be interested in following where the local body is taking this theme.

Sigh, sounds like some of our neighborhoods here. They get a little money and the first thing they do is put up arches with the name of the place, rather than add much-needed services. =(

It's a start! The Council just invested some money into the sign and name change. :-)

Before you know it, there will be a Starbucks welling double soy latte.

I agree nice sign, but add up all the money on new signage and maybe just maybe we could have put in too something a little more useful. Oh dear I'm having rant!
