Court Side

This is the side of the building that was once home to the County Court and has now stood empty for over three years. You can find it in the originally titled County Court Road!

Once again sorry for my absence on the old commenting rounds. I'm a busy boy this week.

Royal Coat Of Arms

'God and my right' is the translation of 'Dieu et mon droit' as seen on the bottom of the British Royal Coat of Arms. 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' is the motto on the Order of the Garter (the bit round the shield) and means 'Evil to him who evil thinks'.

Now all of this is a bit grand to be above the entrance to Costa Coffee, but that's what's coming our way. The building that used to be the Dobells pub is going to be turned into a coffee shop. I know what your thinking - all this is a bit grand to be above the door of a pub. And you're right. The building, which faces onto the Promenade, is on the back of the former County Court and my dad reckons that this Coat of Arms is above what used to be the former entrance to the judges residence. A bit more fitting.

Another thing about the Royal Coat of Arms - on the left of the shield is the English Lion and on the right is the Unicorn of Scotland. The unicorn is chained because in Medieval times it was believed that a free unicorn was a dangerous beast, only to be tamed by virgins!

I'm not sure if all this means that Costa Coffee will have the Royal Seal of Approval!

Green Dome

Just a quick post today. I've posted several different photos showing glimpses of this building over the last few weeks but here is a complete view, with the lion and the domed rotunda, of Lloyd's Bank. This photo was taken from Montpellier Gardens and you can see the new railings I posted about last week. It really is a grand building and it certainly stands out from the other Regency buildings in Cheltenham. Come back tomorrow for my last post....for now....

King Of The Money

This old, slightly cracked, stone lion sits proudly above the entrance to Lloyd's Bank on Montpellier Walk. I'm not sure what his take is on the worldwide credit crunch, but I bet if he were in charge of the purse strings the financial situation would be a roaring success!

Cowardly Lion

One of things I love about Daily Photo Blogging is that you take a photo of something you've seen dozens of times, go to post it and realise you know nothing about it. A quick look on the Internet soon fills in the blanks, and you've learnt something new about the place you call home.

This coat of arms is above the porch of John Dower House, in Crescent Place. The building is now the headquarters of the government body The Countryside Commission, but the coat of arms belongs to one of Britain's former Kings. The imposing building was built in 1820 and was opened as Fisher's Boarding House, but it was soon renamed Clarence Hotel. The renaming was due to a stay in 1827 by Adelaide, Duchess of Clarence. She was the wife of the future King William IV. In 1858 the County police force set up its headquarters in the former hotel and stayed until 1970. The Countryside Commission moved into the building in 1974 and has been there since.

One of the websites I looked at refereed to the Lion as being like the one from the Wizard of Oz! I agree!

Something I can't answer is - Who was/is John Dower?.... Something else to discover...

Marley In Bath

I spent Easter Saturday visiting some friends in Bath, a town about 55 miles South of Cheltenham. Bath is quite similar to Cheltenham as it also has lots of Regency buildings and is renowned for its Spa history. Here are a few of the photos I took. I hope you enjoy them.

The world famous Royal Crescent.

One of the lions on top of the gated entrance to the Royal Park.

A violin playing, tightrope walking street entertainer.

The front of Bath Abbey.

The inside of the Abbey.

A more detailed photo of the stunning stained glass window.
Bath is a favourite haunt for tourists from all over the world and Saturday was no exception. The town was heaving with people. There are loads of things to see in Bath and it would have been nice to be able to explore with a few less visitors, but I still had an excellent day.
Back to Cheltenham photos tomorrow. Come back to see what I can come up with!
