Pancake Day

How could I resist this one?! Another day, another shop window. This is from one of my favourites in town, the clothes shop White Stuff. Their window displays have featured on Cheltenham DP before and included the drunken gingerbread man and the squirrel headed mannequins.

For those that don't know, or have forgotten, today is Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day. Its the day before Ash Wednesday and signifies the start of Lent. The idea is that you eat up all the things that are forbidden during the period of Lent - eggs, fat, sugar - these are made into a batter and fried into flat...um...pancakes! It seems here in the UK its the one day of the year we have pancakes, unlike other countries who have them year round, like France and America. I'll be having some this evening, covered in lemon juice and sugar, very traditional!

Hehe - this made me giggle Marley.
You always come up with such great posts and photos!!!

You also reminded me that it is indeed pancake day so I will be having a go at making them myself - or maybe I should get Nick to make them!!!!

Lemon juice on pancakes? I would never have thought of that!

Thank you for adding me to your blog roll!

Pancake Day. I've only heard of Fat Tuesday and Goodbye Meat. Learn something new everyday!

Yes! Pancake Tuesday - I'm so bummed not to have had pancakes today (although the lunch in Sausalito looking at an overcast SF & dinner in St. Helena Duck with risotto was a pretty good substitute). I know, I know - I'm showing off again. Just out of college, I had an English boyfriend who told me about Pancake Tuesday. I liked that so much that I do make pancakes for dinner even now (when I'm home) on Shrove Tueday. & I do make waffles every weekend for my son in an electric waffle iron - nothing fancy and it's pretty quick.
I did not know about the lemon juice being traditional. Happy feasting.

Marley, I usually eat granola and cereal for breakfast (trying to be good), but you've given me the idea and now I MUST have pancakes!

Tash, I'm jealous! A Sausalito cafe, looking out over the San Francisco bay. If you haven't done it, put it on your bucket list.

Oh pancakes, one of my favorites! My grandparents used to make sour dough pancakes every weekend and we'd all come over for breakfast. I loved mine with Karo light corn syrup, yum!
A national chain restaurant called IHOP (International House of Pancakes) is serving free pancakes today! They have the best, especially with boysenberry syrup!
Enjoy your pancakes!

Haven't made pancakes for a long time, neither the American-style ones nor the thin, crepe ones either. Hmmm.
