Another One Bites The Dust

Another day, another closure. This was Barratts shoe shop on the High Street, and it has gone the same way as other national brands, like Woolworths and MFI. As I've said before its a sad sign of the times, and behind this now defunct brand are people who have been made redundant, debts that add to the financial crisis and another empty shop in town.

My intention has always been to use this blog as a way of recording the changes that take place in Cheltenham, to capture history as it happens, so alongside amusing window displays, macros of flowers, art and architecture I'll feature these sorry sights. A view that is being played out the world over.

It is a sad sight and a sign of tough times. I too feel that we are part historians for our community. This curious mind wants to know what kind of merchandise Barratts used to sell?

Thanks, Marley, for your kind comment on my blog today. It's folks like you that keep me going in this daily quest.

Lets hope for the upturn in the economy and all the new business to come all happens sooner rather than later.

Same thing is happening here... Sign of times, no doubt! Very depressing!

How sad. I hate to see stores closing like that. I hope things turn around soon.

So sad to see another closing and people out of work. A chocolate company here, well in Pennsylvania, has closed it's factory doors and putting 350 people out of work, and the kicker is they are re-opening in Mexico. Great for our American economy in tough times, ugh!
Well they say that 2010 things will pick up! I refuse to see things as bad and really don't watch much news. All they want to do is depress you!

A truly sad sign of the times. Here's hoping the economy starts to turn around soon. Unfortunately, I fear what will replace shops like these that have the bastion of quality for so long. I wonder if consumers will have really learned any lessons about the value of quality over credit run amok and quantity.

Think ours is still open for the minute. There was a feature about the chain on our local paper's website. Some wag suggested that they should have kept to building houses!

We don't even have a Barratt's here, but I reackll them from Brum. I applaud you for never taking the easy way out with the blog. In ten years, a sunset will just be that this will be a specific date. Remember that.

It is happening the world over. If they are not shutting down here the companies are moving off shore. I spent some time in Cheltenham my husband uncle lived there. It is a beautiful place.
