Blog Day The Tenin Technique

How could I not come back for this momentous occasion in CDPB history? And what is a party without punch? So, here I am!

Hello everyone. How have you been? Good. Me? I've been OK. Busy. Not picked up my camera since New Years Eve, until last week. It felt very strange actually but the break from snapping pictures has done me good. I'm still not ready to come back to Cheltenham Daily Photo yet. One day maybe. But I am starting to take photos again. And reminding myself why I liked photography in the first place. Anyway. Today isn't about me.

Today's special Blog Day is to celebrate the start of this wonderful community, 5 short years ago, by our great leader Eric Tenin, with the first daily city photo blog - Paris Daily Photo. The challenge for this unique theme day is to take a photo in the style of the 'Friendly Parisian', either on the ground or at a jaunty angle. This is my tribute to Eric - Cheltenham Town Hall as seen from the pavement.

Theme Day - ChangesThe Last Post

Its the first day of the new year, the first day of the month and the last post here at Cheltenham Daily Photo. As I mentioned yesterday I'm ending the blog to concentrate on other things.

As its the first of the month its Theme Day here in the CDPB community. The theme this month is Changes, which makes a change from the usual 'Best Photo Of The Year', which is now on the 15th, and as I won't be here for that, I'm posting it now, as a change. Got that?! Good!

This photo was originally posted in May and, although its not an earth-shattering photo, the view from the top of Leckhampton Hill is Cheltenham to a lot of people. Its certainly one of my favourite views of my home town. To see all the other Changes participants click here.

And now the part I've been dreading - the goodbye. Over the last two-and-a-bit years I've learnt so much about the town I call home, seen new places, and taken more photographs than I have ever taken in my life. I never imagined that I'd become a blogger (me?! I can barely use a computer!) and join an amazing community, full of inspiring people. Some of you out there are fantastic photographers, others tell wonderful tales, but all are proud of where you live. And all of you should be very proud of your achievements as Daily Photo Bloggers. Its a joyous journey, not without its moments of struggle, but well worth it. The best.

Thank you to everyone who has followed, commented, encouraged and supported me and Cheltenham Daily Photo. It has never been taken for granted. It is very much appreciated. I have made some lovely friends, friends I feel I know very well, but have never met. Thank you to you all.

I wish all of you the very best of luck with your blogging adventure. Goodbye.

And Now The End Is Near

Its the last day of the year and its also my penultimate post. Yes, tomorrow is my final post.

I've got a lot on over the next couple of months, so I'm taking a break to concentrate on other things. I'm not sure whether I'll return to Cheltenham Daily Photo. I may start a new photo blog of some sort at some point in the future, but for now I need to stop.

Over the last year on Cheltenham Daily Photo I have achieved posting every single day. It was, at times, a struggle and I think at some points my photography has suffered, but over the last few months I feel I've turned out some good photos. Photos that I am quite proud of. As I've mentioned in the past, the thought of needing a photo for the sake of a post is not always the best inspiration. I am amazed at how Eric (our great leader) and others who post 365 days a year, year in year out, find the creativity to keep on going. Hats off to them. In fact hats off to all of us who keep our blogs going regularly, not necessarily daily, but post a photo most of the time. Its no mean feat.

Tomorrow is Theme Day, time for goodbyes then, but for now enjoy the last day of the year. See it out with a celebration and welcome the new one with open arms.

Life Is Like A Butterfly

I just realised, I've never told you about Cheltenhams illustrious career as a star of a sitcom. Well, maybe more short lived than illustrious! Back in the late 70's and early 80's the TV program Butterflies was filmed in and around Cheltenham. It was about a woman who wanted to change her life but didn't quite manage it. I only ever watched about half an episode. Once I'd seen the Prom, the Municipal Offices and Hatherley Park I'd had enough! Why watch it on telly when you can see it in real life?!

I told you the sales had started. I braved them this morning. Town was bursting with shoppers and most of them were in a post-christmas-must-get-a-bargain frame of mind. In other words - they kept getting in my way! The majority of shops I looked in had stuff in the sale that was in extra extra large sizes. No good for me. I did pick up a nice blue cardigan though, to match my eyes!

I hope you all had a good Christmas. Mine was great, but it is what you make it. Here in the UK its Boxing Day today, basically a bit more of Christmas Day! The sales start and today is being called Super Saturday, as its the first time in 11 years that Boxing Day has fallen on a Saturday. Retailers are hoping that sales today will be beat those of Christmas Eve, when 1 million pounds was being spent every minute! Recession? What recession?!

As I'm working today, and then off to the pub for the obligatory Christmas Eve drink, I won't get around to you all to say happy Christmas. A Light Dusting

Nowhere near as much as the East coast of America, and a bit less than most of Britain, but we have had snow. A light icing-sugar dusting but it still snowed. And it is cold. So cold. But after all it is December, so what else should we expect? We may even get a white Christmas. That would be magical.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I don't work in an office. I'm sure lots of people out there love working in a little cubicle or in an open plan working area, but its just not my thing. I couldn't think of anything worse. But if I did work in an office I'd love to work for Ricky Gervais' David Brent. Now that is a boss! Cringe makingly hilarious! His comedy series The Office was one of the funniest TV shows of the last decade. Brilliant stuff.

Speaking of office based brilliance, I've found a fantastic blog. It was Blog Of Note last week and it is laugh-out-loud funny. Mr London Street is wonderfully observant of all aspects of life and his office sounds hysterical. I've just started reading and playing catch up, but this post, about food descriptions and the staff canteen is so funny my sides were hurting from laughing! I should say that the sensitive amongst you might be offended by some of Mr London Streets tales but it is so well written I'm sure you'll let him off. Anyway, check it out. Very funny! Did I mention I found it funny?!

Look at the pretty lights! Ooo! This tree, surrounded by artificial snow, is outside the front of the Daffodil Restaurant. Its a bit garish for me but it does make a lovely festive scene. Very Christmassy.

Christmas is a strange time of year. It means all sorts of things to different people. To some it is a Religious celebration, to others its about friends and family, to some its about the presents, and to others its the food, drink and all the seasonal trimmings that make Christmas. To most people its a combination of all these things. Christmas is also a time to look forward with optimism to the coming year, but at the same time remember with fondness those people that are no longer with us, those people that have left our lives. We can look back on mistakes made with wise eyes, missed opportunities with sorrow, and things to come with joy. At this time of year its fine to occasionally have the Christmas Blues.

The Gardens Gallery, in the Proscenium Building, Montpellier Gardens, is a popular venue for local artists to show their work. The exhibitions always have free admission and are very varied. At the moment an exhibit entitled 'The World Through our Eyes' is on at the gallery. Three local artists - Sara Chardin, Amy Blacker and Gez Browning - are displaying their landscape paintings and photography.

Meerkats are everywhere at the moment. TV programs, adverts, cuddly toys, garden ornaments, t-shirts. These ones, in the window of the Pied Piper shop in Montpellier, are all dressed ready for the Christmas festivities. Have you got yours?!

Great Dane

This is a 'What The ***?' photo. Nothing particularly unusual about a dog in a window but it is when its a Great Dane in a wedding dress shop! This big beast was almost filling the small shop and was surrounded by dozens of expensive dresses. The shop was closed and completely secure with metal grills across the windows. Very strange!

Well, the outskirts of Cheltenham town! After what seems like weeks of rain we had a few cold, fine days and then this. Fog and frost. December is here! It is my favourite kind of weather. All cold and crisp. Love it.

I wouldn't mind this coming down my chimney on Christmas Eve! Its not the best photo in the world but I was very aware that I was stood in front of the Ann Summers shop taking photos of the lingerie. So it was a very quick point-and-shoot shot! After all I didn't want another run in with a security guard! And the reason why I was taking a photo of sexy undies? Because it was a good contrast to yesterdays post. Obviously!

I haven't posted any Christmas themed window displays yet and, to be honest, there aren't many in town that really stand out, but this one, in the clothes shop River Island, is an exception. Its a bit of a double-take window. At first glance its just mannequins, but on closer inspection one of the figures has, well, you can see! I'm not sure whether its cool or a bit sinister looking!

Curry Corner

The answer to Saturdays puzzle is Curry Corner. And the TV program that the Indian restaurant featured on is F Word, Gordon Ramsey's Channel 4 food show. Each week the best restaurants in different categories go head to head to be crowd Britain's Best Independent Restaurant, unfortunately Curry Corner just missed out on a place in the final, to be broadcast in a few weeks time. But still good on them for beating so many other great Indian eateries.

And the winner of the Cheltenham postcard? Bob The Bolder of Durham Daily Photo. He named the restaurant but not the TV show, but he was still the closest. Congratulations to him.

Its hard not to show Cheltenham's Regency buildings every day. There are so many and they are a big part of the town. This one is quite typical in design and style - four floors, a wrought iron balcony, stones stairs leading to the imposing front door, simple architectural details, crisp white paint. This one also has the benefit of facing onto Imperial Gardens, behind the Town Hall, and is in one of Cheltenham's best locations.

Glass Ceiling

Its a sad day at Cheltenham Daily Photo (or a thank-God-for-that day, depending on your point of view!) as I'm going to say this is my last post on the refurbishment of Cheltenham's Regent Arcade. As regular visitors will know, I have posted quite often (too much, some say) on the ongoing transformation of the shopping centre. The main area of change has been the roof, which has been completely replaced. The once arched 80's ceiling is now a modern slopped glass one, and I must say it does look quite good. If you click 'Regent Arcade' in the labels below you can see the progress that brought about the new look. Go on. You know you want to!

Theme Day - Waiting

Its the 1st of the month and here in CDP blogland its Theme Day. The theme for December is Waiting. I wasn't very inspired by this months choice but then it suddenly hit me. What are we all waiting for? Christmas! Whether you are waiting for it to arrive because you love it or are waiting for it to arrive because you want to get it out of the way as you hate it, we are all waiting. And how to capture that waiting? An advent calender of course! Some are a candle that you burn each day, some are traditional calenders and have a religious picture, others are chocolate filled. No surprise as to what mine is! Now I'm going to open the first little door and get my chocolatey reward!

Not the best looking chap in the world! This larger than life statue is advertising the film Terminator Salvation outside the Sony shop. The film was running on a big screen TV next to him but it was difficult to watch. His red eyes kept scaring people away!

Back In The Habit

This post is because I wanted to, not because its a good photo. I was doing my paparazzi bit in Imperial Gardens! Well, its not every day you see a nun. Unless you live in a convent. Or are a nun. But then you would be a nun if you lived in a convent! Anyway. I last posted nuns, two for the price of one, here. And check out the comments there too for some nun-related jokes. The main reason for wanting to post this photo? So I could use the title! I'm easily pleased.

How The Other Half Live

As a total contrast to yesterdays terraces here is a house complete with turret, just a stones throw away, in the next street. This house stands right on the corner of Pitville Circus Road and at one time would have been a real landmark standout building. I suppose it still is! I presume the huge building is now divided into flats, but in its heyday it would have been a home to show the standing within society of the owner. And why not? Why have a plain old roof when a turreted tower will do?!

Its not all Regency Georgian townhouses in Cheltenham, there are plenty of areas that encapsulate different architectural styles. These terraced houses in the Fairview area of town are typical of the turn of the last century. They were built for the working classes, crammed into the tiny space, giving a high density of affordable housing. Now these same houses are sold as town centre living and are home to all sorts of different classes. How times change.

This very grand entrance to Weston House in Pitville used to be my doctors surgery. It is now flats, the doctors have moved to a posh new purpose built centre. The Regency building is said to be haunted! Spooky!

I love the detail of the architecture of this former school building that is now converted to apartments. Not actually the last leaf but one of a very few on this tree, and there aren't many left on others. It won't be long until they'll all be naked for winter. The very windy weekend helped a lot of the trees shed their autumn clothes. Is it spring yet?!

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty doesn't look bad for 35 does she? The iconic character started life in Japan in 1974 on a purse and is now a global phenomena. The character is now seen on all sorts of merchandise as well as having her own theme park and maternity hospital in Taiwan! And Hello Kitty is worth big bucks, $1 billion a year to be precise! So this mobile stall in the High Street was doing its bit to boost sales. Umbrella, beach ball, inflatable Hello Kitty anyone?!

Neon Blue

I won't mention the 'C' word (Christmas!) yet but every shop in town is bedecked and ready for the present-buying masses. I suppose its the one time of the year that they can attempt to buck the recessional trend. Anyway. I like neon signs (and Cheltenham is hardly the neon sign capital of the world) so this one flashing away, in a shop window on the Prom, caught my eye. The flashing part caused quite a problem (lots of photos of an unlit sign!) but perseverance paid off and I got the timing right. Twice! Which is very unlike me and my camera.

As well as not mentioning the 'C' word, I won't mention that I've started my 'C' shopping. Talk about organised!

Lest We Forget

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the end of the First World War, and on Armistice day we pause at this time for a two minute silence to remember all those who have died in conflict. At Cheltenhams Cenotaph wreaths of poppies were laid on Remembrance Sunday in a sober ceremony where the fallen were remembered. Lest We Forget.

This is me doing my spying-through-peoples-windows trick! Actually it was an office in one of the Regency townhouses that surround Imperial Gardens. The glamorous light fitting caught my eye and the window made a good frame.

I don't condone spying through windows in any shape or form, unless you are a professional stalker, where its really quite essential!

Red Fountain

Last Thursday was Bonfire Night and on Saturday night a group of us went to the racecourse to see the annual fireworks display. This is a photo from last year, as you can see - no tripod, but it was much the same but colder! At least it didn't rain until the end of the display this year, unlike last year when we all got soaked. Thank goodness for the pub afterwards!

All Saints Church

As I mentioned yesterday, today it is more of All Saints Church. The Catholic church on All Saints Road has some wonderful carved details and lots of interesting pitched roofs. Instead of trying to choose one photo today I thought I'd treat you to four! The first photo is of the stone detail above what was once the main door to the church, it is now sectioned of with railings, I guess to preserve it.

All Saints was established in 1868 by a group of local people keen to create a style of worship not generally found in Cheltenham, that followed the 19th century Oxford Movement.

The church itself was designed by John Middleton. Middleton's original design included a tower with a large spire, but although building and decoration of the interior continued for many years, the gable roof to the bell-tower was not completed until 1992, but without the spire the architect designed over 100 years earlier.

And finally the Crucifix in full that I showed you part of yesterday. Impressive.

This imposing carved statue of Jesus Christ stands on the corner of All Saints Church. This is just a taster of the amazing stone work on and around the building. More tomorrow. But for now...

A follow up to yesterdays post...

Its amazing what you can find out if you ask a question. Yesterdays mystery musical instruments are an Indonesian Gamelan, as many of you said. Knowing this, I found out the following from the Cheltenham Festivals website.

"A gamelan (translated as ‘hit with a hammer’) is an ensemble of percussion instruments on which the traditional music of Java and Bali is played. It usually consists of metallophones (xylophones) and gongs, the best ones made of bronze, and mounted on beautifully carved and painted wooden frames. It has a distinctive and melodic sound and accompanies dances and all-night shadow-puppet plays in Indonesia.

The Cheltenham Gamelan was made in the foundries outside the Royal City of Surakarta (Solo) in central Java, Indonesia. The lovely white roses carved on the wooden frames were designed specifically to complement the Pittville Pump Room, although one of the wood carvers was apparently somewhat baffled as to why anyone would want what he took to be cabbages on their gamelan!

Many aspects of playing the gamelan match targets within the music curriculum, the most obvious being playing by ear and from memory, learning about pitch, dynamics and tempo, and taking part in group performances. As a result the Cheltenham Gamelan is becoming an increasingly popular resource for all key stages in schools.

As well as a thriving schedule of schools’ workshops, the community gamelan players meet regularly to develop their interest in this beautiful music. It enhances other skills such as listening to others and working as a team, and is therefore ideal for corporate functions, team-building exercises and parties. With no previous experience participants can, within a short time, play a real Javanese composition and have a lot of fun along the way."

So now we all know!

While I was having a sneaky peak around Pitville Pump Room last week I snuck into a side room off of the balcony. The room was full of these oriental-looking musical instruments, not what I was expecting to find in the Pump Room. Does anyone have any idea what country they might originate from? I have no clue.

Look Out

There is something about squirrels that just make me smile. I often stop to watch them busy at work, running, climbing. This little chap was at the Cheltenham Crem, taking a moment to have a look around before carrying on squirrelling.

Theme Day - Doorways

Its the first day of the month (where is the year going?!) and here in the CDPB community its Theme Day. This months theme is 'Doorways' and Cheltenham has a host of ornate doorways to choose from. I went for this blue door, surrounded by a porch of wrought iron. Quite typical of Cheltenham and it Georgian architecture.

Can you see the padlocks securing the door? The building is for sale and the agents don't want anyone untoward paying a visit!

Halloween!

Its All Hallows Eve! (spooky laugh!) Yesterday - grave stones, today - a pumpkin (original, I know!) Tonight I'm going to my workplace with a small group of people to have an evening with three Mediums. I'm going with an open mind as I'm a half believer, half sceptic. It should be interesting, I'll report back tomorrow.

Grave Situation

Its almost the spookiest day of the year. Ooooo! Instead of a carved pumpkin or a scary witch I thought we'd have a tour around Cheltenham Crematorium. Don't let it be said I don't show you all the best places! There's not a lot to say really, lots of graves, lots of dead people, lots of other-worldly feelings.

Morgan

This is what you call a proper car. None of that modern rubbish but real design and quality. That is Morgan. At least I think so. This fine example belongs to Hotel On The Park in Cheltenham, and advertises the in-house restaurant Parkers. The hotel overlooks Pitville Park and the vintage car suits the hotel perfectly. Classy.

Decay

As a complete contrast to yesterdays photos, today we have graffiti. Not much to say other than this stencil type of 'street art' is cropping up all over the place. Its a bit like a poor mans Banksy. Not as clever and not as funny. God, I must be getting old! OK, I quite like it!

New Discovery

Having lived in Cheltenham all my life (exciting, I know!) and having featured the Pitville Pump Room here several times before, I realised I'd never actually been inside! So yesterday I took a little photo trip. Its fantastic inside, though a little eerie as there were no staff to be seen (I think they were all having their lunch!) The primary purpose of the Pump Room is as a venue for music performances, parties, conferences and weddings. The main room is surrounded by a balcony and topped by a fantastic dome. There are so many wonderful features to photograph and the afternoon light showed the place at its best. It was a real treat. Here are two of my favourite photos, but there will be more to come.

All That Glitters

New Bench

As you all know I've been following the revamping of the Regent Arcade for the last 2 years. Some may say a little insanely, but follow it I have! Anyway, the end is in sight and by mid November the shopping Centre will be all new and shiny, apart from the new facade on the High Street, which is happening next year. I took this shot off of one of the upper levels looking down onto the main shopping area. I quite like the new tiles and designer benches. Good to take a rest on.

Packing Up

The changes in the seasons brings about changes in Cheltenham. All sorts of things are packing up and finishing.

Tables and chairs are packed up for Autumn.

The Cheltenham Literature Festival packs up for another year.

And the workmen at the Regent Arcade are finally packing up the scaffolding. The transformation will soon be complete!

Knitwits

A special post for all you secret knitters out there, or secret knitter wannabes!

When I was a youngster, in the early 80's my mum, her friends, my gran and my aunts all knitted. Its was all the rage. Jumpers, cardigans, hats and scarfs were produced on a regular basis, all in wonderful 80's colours. I was a Garfield fan (still am) and my mum and gran decided to knit me a Garfield jumper. I remember it clearly. A black, itchy woollen jumper, badly fitting, with an orange cat on the front, the only resemblance to the cartoon cat being the black stripes. It was horrible and horrible to wear. I think that is why I still avoid knitted jumpers these days. Scarred for life!

Now its time for your confessions. Who is a secret knitter out there? There must be some!

How Old?!

Lots of buildings, old and new, in and around Cheltenham have the date of construction on the front. Some are just a date carved into a brick but some, like this one, are very grand. The details on this one are extra special. You can see that the house was built in 1897 but its the carved flowers underneath that caught my eye. Each one is different but just as intricate as the next. Nice touch.

Little Urn

As a contrast (told you I was into contrasts at the moment, shame I wasn't feeling it last Theme Day!) As a contrast to the last few days here is something completely different. Just off of Montpellier is this large-ish house that is all black and white. Either side of the black front door are these urns. To me they are just crying out for some fresh green ferns or bright red geraniums. That would make a nice contrast to all the black and white!

Two Years On And Still Following The Path

Last Autumn themed photo today, not that I'm not going to show you more this season! Anyway, this post marks the 2 year anniversary of this blog. I can't believe how 2 years of my life have flown by and most of the time, almost every day, I've been posting on this blog and visiting you, my cyber (virtual?) friends, seeing the world through your camera lenses. The CDPB community is a remarkable one, full of wonderful bloggers and photographers, who offer support and advice in all sorts of capacities. I know you've seen it all before but Autumn is in full swing (we even had a frost last night) and the trees are looking at there absolute best. This red maple was just crying out to be featured on Cheltenham Daily Photo. Its actually the only decent photo I've taken of leaves with the light behind them. I'm quietly pleased with this one. Over the next few days I'll share some more Autumn photos with you. I know, I know but its not here for very long! Humour me!

Straight And Curved

It's more shapes and lines from me today. Although I suppose every photo contains shapes and lines! Anyway. Here we have Eagle Tower in the background and The New Club at the front. Its also another contrast of architectural styles. I've posted on Eagle Tower before but I'll fill you in on The New Club today. This former Private Gentlemen's club was formed in 1874 and used to be situated in a building on the Prom. It moved to this fine Regency building in Montpellier Parade in 1970. The club now has open membership for men and women, although you do have to be a professional to join or to have been recommended by a present member. Well, you've got to keep the riff raff out! Speaking of riff raff, I had to deliver something there once and it is very grand inside. Really lovely. High ceilings, sweeping staircase, wooden panelled walls, a library, bars, a restaurant, need I go on?

Shapes

Lots of new buildings - offices and homes - are appearing around Cheltenham. Not as many as at the height of the property boom, but new-builds are still happening. These modern town houses, just off of Imperial Gardens, have a funky design with interesting shaped windows, different textures and unusual features. I quite like them, though they are very expensive, so I won't be buying one anytime soon!

Composers Baton

A Little Bit Of Magic

Look at this cute little VW Camper Van! Ever seen one like this? Me neither. It was a tiny little thing. About five and a half foot high and seven foot long. This little guy was advertising Illusions Magic Bar, based in Bristol. At first I thought the magician worked out of the van but it seems they have a proper venue.

What is your favourite magic trick? I like the old levitation illusion. I'm quite a dab hand at it. Just call me David Blaine!

Theme Day - Contrast

Its the first day of the month and here in CDPB world its Theme Day. The theme for October is Contrast. Its safe to say I didn't really feel this months theme. I didn't just want to show a colour contrast (although I'm sure there are some fantastic examples out there), instead I went down the slightly off-beat and slightly desperate-for-a-photo route! This is a mobile phone mast with a bird box attached to it, quite a contrast. Good old BTcellnet thinking about how to make money, increase their coverage, put up a huge aerial and care for the birds!

Dong! Dinner Is Served

We are still having a look around the shops and restaurants in The Suffolks. This figure is one of a pair, ready with a gong, in the window of Indian restaurant B-Ten. I've had a couple of takeaway meals from here and the food is delicious. Best of all if you collect your food you get a discount off of the bill and if they deliver it to your door you get some free beer. A win win situation!

Let There Be Light

And what lights they are! Blimey, look at them. Talk about over the top. And I bet they are a bugger to keep clean, all that dusting! You won't be surprised to hear this isn't someones house but the display of chandeliers in one of the many antique shops in 'The Suffolks'. The area of town has lots of little shops, some arty, some stylish, some filled to the rafters with delightful gems - a bit like this one.

So, would you fancy a grand chandelier hanging in your house? Maybe you've got one. Are they a bugger to clean?

This is St Mary and Corpus Christi Church in Down Hatherley, a little village somewhere between Cheltenham and Gloucester. The site of the church dates from around the 15th century but the main church building is from 1859.
